The University of Waterloo School of Architecture, located in Cambridge, Ontario, is a celebrated example of adaptive reuse and design excellence. Completed in 2004 by LGA Architectural Partners, with David Warne serving as project architect during his time at the firm, the project transformed a former 19th-century textile mill into an 85,000 square foot academic facility. The design centers around a dramatic three-storey atrium and integrates studios, lecture halls, a library, and exhibition spaces, all while preserving the industrial character of the original structure. Exposed materials, visible structural connections, and a mix of historic brickwork with modern glazing create a rich architectural dialogue between past and present. With a focus on sustainability, natural light, and community engagement, the project has become a landmark for both the city and the academic institution.
